This year, members and their guests had a choice of two very different
trips.
A Day in Ipoh with James Devadason
On 13 March 1999, fifty brave souls boarded the train at the historic
Kuala Lumpur station early in the morning, and alighted in Ipoh, at an
equally beautiful station designed by the same architect, AB Hubback.
James Devadason regaled the group with facts and anecdotes which covered
historical events, personalities and buildings during lunch, served on
the verandah of the Majestic Hotel overlooking the older sections of town.
The tour of Ipoh's "Old Town" covered 21 points of interest
and ended with a break for tea at the FMS Bar and Restaurant.
Our deepest appreciation to James Devadason for an informative and enjoyable
tour of Ipoh. Thank you also to Kamal Hussin Abdul Hamid and Diana Lee
for comments shared enroute and Jennifer Harvey for the photography.
Rumah Uda Manap at Rimbun Dahan
About 70 members and guests spent the evening of 5 September 1999 visiting
the restored Rumah Uda Manap at Rimbun Dahan in Kuang.
Built a century ago on the banks of the Perak River, the Rumah Uda Manap
was fashioned by Chinese-Indonesian craftsmen. The house is carved and
painted, inside and out, and tiled with wood shingles from Indonesia.
Waveney and Peter Jenkins and Angela Hijjas and Hijjas Kasturi recently
completed this joint restoration project.
Rimbun Dahan, the home of Hijjas Kasturi and Angela Hijjas, exhibits
elements of Malay vernacular architecture, despite its being built of
steel and concrete. The use of roller shutters frees the ground level
to recall a house on tiangs (stilts). The avoidance of wood as a material
was to highlight timber's limited reserves, opting instead for traditional
finishes like Shanghai plaster and terrazzo. The house, gallery and grounds
are the centre for a residency programme for artists. Photography by Ng
