Office Matters

For the second time, Kampung Cina, one of the communities in the historic district of Kuala Terengganu has been recognised by the World Monuments Watch (WMW), in its listing of One Hundred Most Endangered Sites 2000. In conjunction with this announcement, American Express, which provided the Badan with a USD 50,000 grant in 1998, kindly sponsored the publication of the Kampung Cina, Kuala Terengganu brochure which accompanies this annual report.

This brochure celebrates the uniqueness of the old capital of Terengganu with an emphasis on Jalan Bandar, which is the modern day Kampung Cina. Mr Chan Yuen Kiong, Country Manager of American Express Malaysia, and the President of the Badan briefed the media at the launch held on 11 October 1999 at No 2 Jalan Stonor.

The Kampung Cina Committee and its consultant, GDP Perancang Sdn Bhd, continue to work with the Government and the community in the formulation of an area conservation and revitalisation plan, to be presented to WMW on completion. The Committee is made up of Laurence Loh (Chairman), Chris Boyd, Mazlan Ali, Waveney Jenkins and Dr Chandran Jeshurun.

Arkitek Shilpa has completed the dilapidation survey and upgrading proposal for the façade, roof structure and external envelope for 51-53 Jalan Bandar, a project chosen for historical and family interests and from which a museum may eventuate.

The proposals for restoration include removing all unsympathetic extraneous additions; repairing the roof; conserving features such as the plasterwork, tiled roofs and shard work; reinstating the original open courtyard design; recreating a gateway to the river, and installation of a sewage disposal system. Implementation of the foregoing proposals awaits funding which is being reviewed by the owners of the buildings. The Committee will keep abreast of the family's decision on this matter.
