This is the second year in the Plan of Action for the Education
Programme: Pilot Project 2000. As the first year was to raise awareness
of the programme, this year the Education Committee has made progress
in getting the Pilot Project accepted.
The Ministry of Education has approved the concept as proposed for co-curricular
activities in secondary schools and will be kept informed. Pilot schools
in the Kuala Lumpur area have been identified and preliminary discussions
initiated with the liaison for schools in Penang and Malacca. The Resource
Centre has been improved and expanded and the Badan has launched its website
and upgraded its computer system.
To celebrate the theme associated with Our Heritage on Stage on
Heritage Day, the Badan invited about a dozen schools to participate in
a Competition for Secondary Schools. Students were invited to explore
and express creatively the link between the performing arts and architecture.
Sekolah Sri Garden, Sekolah Sri Kuala Lumpur, Convent Bukit Nanas and
Sekolah Menengah St John sent in sixty-two entries. These included photographs,
paintings, drawings, computer graphics, three-dimensional presentations
and architectural renderings. All the submissions were exhibited on Heritage
Day and fourteen prizes were awarded by age groups: 12-15 years and 16-18
years.
The Badan appreciates the efforts of Council member Lim Huck Chin who
led the subcommittee in charge of the competition and the judging. Members
of this subcommittee included Rowena Saura, Nga Johnson, Pam Whitaker
and Phang Khee Teik.
Sekolah Sri Garden has contributed much to the success of the Pilot Project
both in 1998 and 1999. This school sent in the majority of the entries
for this year's competition. The students and staff have shown a high
level of interest and commitment to the activities associated with the
Pilot Project. Mr Chow Kok Ching, Head of Secondary School, has been instrumental
in this regard and is committed to on campus participation early next
year.
RM 40,000 grant has been obtained from the Canadian High Commission and
RM25,000 committed by British Council as part of its 'School and Society'
project. While additional funds are being sought, the monies obtained
to date will enable the Committee to begin research, design and development
of the Teacher's Kit and start campus based activities with Sekolah Sri
Garden and the other schools who submitted entries to the Heritage Day
competition. With the delay in funding however, the completion of the
Pilot Project will be extended to the year 2001. |
