Badan Warisan Malaysia recognised Syed Alatas Mansion as the "Most
Excellent Project" in the category of Restoration in its first national
Awards for Conservation and Heritage Development in a ceremony at the
Mansion on 18 September 1999. Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang, the owner,
and the consultant, GLC Architects and the contractor, South Hill Construction
were recognised with presentations of plaques and certificates. It was
the opinion of the Jury Panel felt that the restoration was undertaken
with great sensitivity and minimal disturbance to the original fabric.
This is the first effort of the Badan to recognise the conservation efforts
of organisations and individuals on a national level and is targeted at
professionals, academics, government and building owners in the hope that
it will stimulate interest in the conservation and preservation of Malaysia's
built heritage. We are very grateful to the members of the Jury Panel,
Laurence Loh (Chairman), Datuk Hj Abdul Rahim bin Abdullah, Prof Dato'
Parid Wardi bin Sudin, Jimmy Lim and Prof Madya Mohamad Tajuddin for their
time and thoughtful review of the submissions.

in Kedah-both received Honorary Mention in the category of Restoration-and
Kajian Sejarah Senibina Kota Lama Duyong, Kuala Terengganu which received
Honorary Mention in the category of Conservation Studies.
