While the mission of Badan Warisan Malaysia revolves around built heritage, we fully recognise that built heritage is interwoven with the natural historical and cultural environment. We believe that heritage education is an important foundation for heritage awareness. People need to be aware that our heritage buildings, historic zones and rich cultural background constitute the heart and soul of the nation. History is the memory of events and places, and education acts as a vital bridge to the future.
The Education Programme Pilot Project was targeted at teachers in selected secondary schools in three areas with 4 schools in the Klang Valley in 2000 and extended to schools in Penang and Malacca in 2001. The initial trials and workshops involved teacher trainers and trainees, teachers and students. A total of a few hundred people were involved in the training process.
A series of workshops and a specially developed teacher's kit provided resources and guidelines to stimulate the participants. Apart from Badan Warisan's education team, other facilitators also contributed their expert knowledge to the workshops.
We are further developing our outreach and school programmes to reach younger students. Participation in our workshops will enable young people to appreciate the cultural diversity of their Malaysian heritage.
