Members' Trip to Negeri Sembilan We are planning a self-drive trip to Pengkalan Kempas-Linggi-Rembau for members. Among the proposed activities will include a heritage walk in Rembau, a visit to the megaliths in Pengkalan Kempas (photo above) and a top at the Dutch Fort in Linggi.

GIFT SHOP News: Discount on BWM Publications Badan Warisan Malaysia is offering a special discount on its publications to members and students.

Odeon Cinema

Built by the Cathay Organization in 1936, the Odeon Cinema was an expression of the links between the innovations of cinematography and Art Deco.

AO Coltman was the architect and Steen Sehested prepared the reinforced concrete design. The building featured new safety designs such as emergency lighting and fire prevention systems for the projector room. State-of-the-art ventilation grills and exhaust fans enhanced air circulation. The foyers were laid with locally produced rubber flooring.

There are strong Art Deco elements such as the lettering style of the cinema name, vertical pylons and flagpoles. Above the entrance, a horizontal beam, embellished with a mosaic depicting drama, comedy and music, intersects the strong vertical mullions. On the side façade, "ribs" create a vertical rhythm.

Odeon Cinema operated as a movie theatre until November 1997 and is now an arcade selling clothes, magazines, electronic goods and snacks.

Tan Sri Stanley Edward Jewkes, 1913-2011
It is with great sadness that Badan Warisan Malaysia records the passing of Tan Sri Stanley Jewkes on Sunday 19 June 2011, in Florida. Jewkes would have turned 98 this October.

Mubin Sheppard Memorial Prize - Cycle 9 Winners List
The awards and prizes for the Cycle 9 (2010/2011) were conferred on 15 December 2011 preceding the 28th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Badan Warisan Malaysia (BWM). The Prize Giving Ceremony was officiated by YABhg Tun Dato’ Seri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, President of BWM.
