Lee Rubber Building
Situated
on the corner of Jalan Tun HS Lee and Jalan Hang Lekir is the Lee Rubber Building
that was designed in the Art Deco style by AO Coltman in the 1930s. The building
has a strong geometric shape with the corner set at a 45° angle, separating
it into three unit bays. Mullions, located between the windows, emphasize the
front façade.
Lee Kong Chian, a rubber magnate, industrialist, banker and philanthropist founded
Lee Rubber Company. In 1952, he set aside a large part of his wealth for the
establishment of the Lee Foundation. This is a philanthrophic institution devoted
to advancing causes such as culture and education.
