Charity Art Exhibition In Memory of Mrs Tan Siau Bian
From 13 April 2010

Charity Art Exhibition

Members and friends are invited to a Charity Art Exhibition to raise funds for Badan Warisan Malaysia.

The story behind the exhibition is truly inspiring. In 1989 Dato' Dr. Tan and his late wife, Siau Bian, founded The Art Gallery, Penang. The gallery’s aim was to promote and collect pioneer artists of Malaysia.  But the gallery was also one of the first private galleries in the country to be involved in charity work and over the years organised many successful fund-raising shows for numerous causes and institutions.

Unfortunately, Mrs Tan Siau Bian was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2000. After being hospitalised for nearly a year in Singapore, she passed away peacefully on 6 November 2001.

From 2002, the activities of The Art Gallery, Penang remained in abeyance, till in April 2009 Dato' Dr. Tan was approached by Amatir Resources Sdn Bhd, owner of Art Salon @ Seni, to manage the gallery and with this opportunity, Dato' Dr. Tan is now proud to be hosting exhibitions once again.

True to his charitable values, Dato' Dr. Tan has decided to organise another charity exhibition in memory of Mrs Tan Siau Bian, with Badan Warisan as the beneficiary.

The exhibition will feature 47 paintings by 12 artists, all of whom have exhibited at his gallery before. Almost all the paintings are donated by the gallery except for a few donated by the artists (Zulkifli Yusoff and Ng Hon Loong). Dato' Dr. Tan hopes that all the paintings will go to good homes, where they will be appreciated for a long time to come.

This charity event is special as the buyer does not really pay for the painting. Here, the buyer chooses a painting, notes the price, and donates that amount to Badan Warisan. He or she then receives a tax-exempt receipt from Badan Warisan and in return is given the chosen painting free. In this way, both Badan Warisan and the donor benefit from the donation of the paintings.

Badan Warisan is grateful to Dato' Dr. Tan for his exceptional generosity and deep commitment to Malaysia’s heritage.

We are delighted and honoured that Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Leo Moggie officiated at the official opening on 27 March 2010.
