Proposal for Conserving Historic Bukit Persekutuan (Federal Hill) as a Critical Green Lung of Kuala Lumpur and site of the Natural History Museum of Malaysia
21 January 2008

    The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and Badan Warisan Malaysia (BWM) sent a Concept Proposal* recommending to the Federal Government that Bukit Persekutuan (Federal Hill), Kuala Lumpur should preserve its existing natural and heritage character and serve the public as:

a) a healthy green lung area for recreational, educational and for multi-use purposes, such as:
i. A Recreational area
ii. An Ethno Botanical Garden
iii. A Nature Education Centre
iv. A Centre for Youth organizations  and artist communities
v. An Architectural Heritage Enclave, and
vi. A Healthy Lifestyle and Sustainable Living Centre and

b) the proposed location for Natural History Museum of Malaysia, due to its forested nature, proximity to population, tourism, education, recreational and transportation hubs.

The objective of the Concept Proposal is to recommend  the conservation of the scenic, natural and historical 70-hectare Bukit Persekutuan (Federal Hill), as an extension of the Taman Tasik Perdana (Lake Gardens), as one of the main green lungs and recreational areas for the communities in the city for the purpose of:

a. Ecological functions;
b. A center of excellence for Environmental Education including the site of the Natural History Museum of Malaysia; and
c. Recreational use for city dwellers.

This Concept Proposal notes that Kuala Lumpur is in need of more green lung areas as is Highlighted in the KL Structure Plan 2020 and that KL has an ‘incomplete green network’ especially in the City Centre. Green lungs reduce heat, clean the air, absorb rainwater and reduce flash floods.

Badan Warisan Malaysia together with the Malaysian Nature Society and the Penduduk Sri Bukit Persekutuan have jointly initiated a petition to raise public awareness and support to save Bukit Persekutuan (Federal Hill).  You can sign a copy of the petition at Badan Warisan Malaysia's Heritage Centre and Malaysian Nature Society Headquarters on Jalan Kelantan or you can download it from our website.  The signatures will be compiled and submitted to the relevant authorities to press for the conservation of this historic green lung.
